Yesterday was approved at the Senate Decriminalizing Abortion Project

With 17 votes to 14 was approved yesterday by the Senate decriminalizing Abortion Project (within the first 12 weeks), thus obtaining preliminary approval, through the month of  March 2012 which will be voted in the House of Deputies.

Iniciativas Sanitarias celebrates this development and reinforces the importance of Sexual and Reproductive Health Services as the framework to attend unwanted pregnancy.

Today the Senate will vote the law to legalize abortion in Uruguay

The Senate will vote today on the Decriminalization of Abortion Project. It was approved by the Health Commission, after consultation with some representatives of civil society, including their input was present by Iniciativas Sanitarias.

The opinion of health professionals, along with the experience developed in the Sexual and Reproductive Health Service, are the basis to allow progress towards the abortion legalization , allowing women to make their decision, taking care of their health.

Sexual and Reproductive Health Service

Women’s Hospital

Pereira Rossell Hospital Center

Sexual and Reproductive Health Service works since 2007. Its purpose is to serve women seeking care specializing in sexual and reproductive health. The base is the confidentiality and human´s rights to health information and to make their own decisions.

Reasons for referral:

To inform women who has an unwanted pregnancy (as is write in the Law 18. 426), contraception,  violence, sexual and reproductive rights in the pregnancy and childbirth and sexuality.

What is unwanted pregnancy counseling?

It is a comprehensive medical visit with health professionals covered in the Law on Defense of Sexual and Reproductive Health (No. 18 426, 2008). This implies that women have the right to receive information about their alternatives and if they decide to finish the pregnancy, they can receive information on low-risk methods to do so.

The first medical visit is important to confirm the pregnancy and make the detection of non-viable pregnancies, gestational age, group and rh, so counseling is usually done in at least two visits.

After abortion is the last one medical visit on this context. It is to prevent complications and make counseling and provision of contraceptive methods. The health team also attend  social  and psychological  woman aspects, referring to the abortion.

The Service is to…

All ages women. They can be accompanied. It is not necessary to be users of the public health system.

How?

The service  is inside the Pereira Rossell Hospital. Is necessary to go between 8am to 4pm. to  take a number at Ground Floor in the Gynecology Building.
